Tampa, FL (May 8, 2019) - A distracted driver caused a crash involving five vehicles on I-75. The crash took place on Tuesday, May 7th, around 10:35 a.m.
Police say that 41-year-old Robert Louis Fread Jr. was traveling southbound on I-75 when he spilled coffee inside his vehicle. Fread looked down and then looked up as he continued driving towards traffic. Several vehicles were stopped in front of Fread's vehicle and by the time he looked up, he was unable to stop in time to avoid a crash. Fread's vehicle slammed into the back of another vehicle causing a chain reaction crash.
One driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Tampa General. A second driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene but not hospitalized. The wreck caused traffic to slow to a crawl along the highway for several hours. Fread was charged with careless driving for his role in the crash.
Each year, about 250,000 injury accidents are reported in Florida. Many of these accidents will involve injuries to at least one innocent victim.
