Tarpon Springs, FL (December 13, 2018) - A 9th-grade student was struck by a bicycle in Tarpon Springs on Wednesday, December 12th. According to authorities, the teenager, identified as Janeva Bucsynski, was traveling across East Lake Road when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Buczynski suffered serious injuries in the collision, including broken bones and a neck injury. She does have movement in her arms and legs, according to a family friend. The crash happened just before 7:00 am as Buczynski was struck by a Saturn vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The Florida Highway Patrol came to the crash scene and conducted an investigation. It was later determined that the Saturn had a green light in its direction of travel when Buczynski was struck.
The 51-year-old driver was charged with operating with a suspended license but received no other charges for their role in connection with the crash.
Many people enjoy riding bikes year-round across our state. While bicycling can be an enjoyable hobby, a means of exercise, or simply a mode of transportation, a bicyclist puts themselves at risk each time they get on their bike on Florida streets and roadways. In 2012, over 100 fatal bicycle accidents were reported across our state. Countless more crashes involved serious injury to the bicyclist.
In a bicycle accident, it is important to determine who was at fault. Some signs of negligent driving include failing to stop at crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs, impaired driving, distracted driving such as texting, speeding, reckless driving, and more. All of these factors must be considered by officials in deciding why the accident took place.
