Volusia County, FL (February 24, 2020) - A 42-year-old man was killed in a crash that took place in Volusia County on Saturday, February 22nd. The crash took place around 10:15 p.m. on US 1 near Broadway Avenue.
According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, a Dodge Caliber and a Nissan Titan were stopped at a red light on US 1. As a Toyota Camry proceeded to the intersection, it failed to stop and crashed into the rear-end of the Dodge before striking the rear of the Nissan. A 37-year old woman driving the Dodge sustained serious injuries. A passenger, Brian McCracken, died at the crash scene. The 33-year-old Camry driver, Sean Higgins, sustained minor injuries.
Troopers are still investigating and there are charges pending against Higgins at this time.
Fatal collisions occur in Florida about once every three hours. While many people believe that rear-end crashes normally minor in nature, that is often not the case. A rear-end crash that takes place at a high speed can have a devastating impact on victims. These crashes can cause a whiplash effect which can result in traumatic head and neck injuries from the sudden jolt of the vehicle.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of Brian McCracken following this fatal crash in Volusia County.
