Weston, FL (February 23, 2019) - A bicyclist was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle on Friday, February 22nd, at the intersection of Saddle Club Road and Lakeview Drive.
The Broward Sheriff, along with Fire Rescue teams, were at the scene around 7:30 a.m. The bicyclist, a woman in her 70s, was struck by a vehicle while riding in the roundabout on Saddle Club. Police believe that the driver was distracted by something in her vehicle, but do not believe that the distraction was caused by a cellphone. Neither the bicyclist nor the driver were identified.
Emergency workers rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. No further information was immediately available.
Florida ranks first among all states in bicycle fatalities, with 5.7 fatalities reported per 1 million people and the number of injuries reported even greater. Bicyclists remain especially vulnerable to death or catastrophic injuries on Florida's streets and highways. Our thoughts go out to the woman who was hurt in this tragic crash in Weston, who we hope will receive the treatment necessary to make a complete recovery. From initial reports, it appears as though the driver was at fault in causing the crash.
