Yesterday, a 23-year-old woman named Arteshia Cowart was driving her Buick LaSabre with her 2-year-old and 3-year-old children in the back seat when she pulled into the path of an F-150. The truck hit the back left door of her vehicle, which caused the LaSabre to rotate. As such, the 2-year-old boy was ejected through the back window.
The boy landed on the sidewalk on Highway 17. The Buick rolled backward and missed him by 5 feet. Cowart and her 3-year-old were taken to Lakeland Regional Health with few injuries, while her son was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. This afternoon, we heard that he is in good condition and should be released from the hospital by tomorrow.
Investigators are still looking into whether or not the car seats were properly installed and if the children were properly secured when the accident occurred. Police said that there were no speed issues relating to the crash.
