Alachua County, FL (December 29, 2018) - One person was killed when a car crashed through the front window of an Alachua County Restaurant on Thursday, December 27th.
Around 3:00 pm, the Gainesville Fire Department along with police and rescue workers were called to Jason's Deli at 6791 W. Newberry Road about a crash. When police arrived, they discovered that a 92-year-old driver crashed a car into the building. Two customers inside the restaurant were struck when the vehicle came through the front entrance. The customers were rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital and North Florida Regional Medical Center. One of the victims, 77-year-old Pamela Thrift succumbed to her injuries. The condition of the other victim is not known at this time.
The driver, Harold Silver, told police that he accelerated his vehicle to free his car from a parking space marker. As he accelerated, he traveled over the curb and into the restaurant.
Investigators are still looking into the crash and determining whether charges will be filed.
We extend our condolences to the family of Pamela Thrift and the other victim injured in this horrific crash. It is likely that the driver in this crash will be held responsible for his negligent action in accelerating his vehicle into the restaurant. Vehicle negligence can occur anywhere, including parking lots. This accident is a sad reminder of the fact that fatal collisions are a possibility anywhere and that they can affect us in an instant, even in the most unlikely places.
