Cocoa, FL (January 23, 2019) - A man was killed in a suspected DUI crash in Cocoa on Wednesday, January 22nd. The crash happened just after midnight on State Road 520 near Varr Avenue.
33-year-old Jacqueice Witcher was driving a 2014 black Honda Accord in the eastbound lanes of SR 520 when he struck 56-year-old Bruce D. Calkins. Calkins was walking along SR 520 when the crash occurred. Following impact, Witcher fled the scene. He was apprehended a short time later by police. His vehicle was found with front-end damage and a missing front bumper.
Following an investigation, Witcher was arrested by police on charges related to the crash and suspicion of DUI. There is no further information available at this time.
Our condolences go out to the family of Bruce Calkins. DUI crashes continue to cause major problems in Florida. Deciding to drive under the influence is one of the worst decisions that a person can make and can have catastrophic consequences for everyone on the roadway. Impaired drivers have slower reaction times and place themselves and others in extreme danger each time they get behind the wheel. A DUI crash is likely to lead to serious and sometimes irreversible consequences as we see in this case.
