Fort Pierce, FL (April 1, 2020) - A 46-year-old man from Port St. Lucie died in a crash involving a car and a moped in Fort Pierce. The crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29th.
Police and rescue workers were called to the scene in the southbound lanes of US 1 near Tumblin Key Road. According to authorities, the car and the moped were both traveling in the same direction on US 1 when the car rear-ended the moped. The moped driver, Jason Shultz, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. There is no word on whether anyone else was hurt as a result of the crash. The cause of the collision is still unknown.
The Fort Pierce Police Department is investigating at this time and has not said whether charges will be filed.
Moped and motorcycle accidents in Florida can take a major toll on victims. A small vehicle, such as a moped, is not designed to withstand the force of a major collision with a larger vehicle such as a passenger car. Riders are often thrown from their bikes following the crash which can also result in serious and possibly fatal injuries. The cause of this crash will be carefully investigated by authorities.
We extend our thoughts and sympathies to the family of Jason Shultz during this difficult time.
